Carbon Measurement
There is increasing awareness and attention to understanding and measuring the carbon impact throughout the pulp, paper and print value chain. This is both on an organisation’s operational impact and on the products they supply.
Howard Smith Paper Group has undertaken a full carbon impact (Greenhouse Gas) assessment of our business, September 2008, audited by the Edinburgh Centre of Carbon Management (ECCM). This encompasses all our direct and indirect emissions where they are identified. (Scope 1, 2 and 3 as defined by the Carbon Trust).
Additionally we are in the process of developing a methodology to bring some consistency to measuring and reporting the carbon intensities of the products that we sell. This will be aligned towards the recently published British Standards Institute, PAS 2050.
We have published our Carbon policy which will be reviewed annually as understanding and reporting needs of this subject develops further.
We are committed to:
- Achieving a reduction in our carbon emissions
- Working with key suppliers to understand the full life cycle impacts and carbon arising through their activities and products
- Considering how credibly products may be offered as carbon balanced
- Continually reviewing our resource efficiency. This includes how renewable energy may be utilised in the future
The carbon impacts of Howard Smith Paper products have been estimated and can now be Carbon Balanced by the World Land Trust, an ecological charity. To learn more go to www.carbonbalancedpaper.com
