Matt coated papers have highly distinctive printing characteristics which must be considered and taken into account by both printers and designers alike.
Unlike other paper qualities, matt coated papers are predominantly uneven in their texture. The surface, despite its outwardly smooth appearance, consists of a series of microscopic peaks and valleys. This is designed to prevent the type of reflective sheen which can result from the use of a gloss coated paper, making it ideal for the production of areas of text. However, the result of this can be to leave all matt coated sheets susceptible to ink-rub. This is caused by the often fragile peaks being ripped away during usage. In an effort to reduce this, there are a number of steps which can be taken:
The application of excessively heavy print areas should be minimised.
Impermeable varnish used in the form of 'in-line' sealing often offers a degree of resistance to rub.
Alternatively, where heavy print is required, a UV varnish gives an attractive finish, whilst simultaneously protecting these areas.
In addition, careful design can play a significant part in limiting the effects of show-through if heavy print areas can be supported by similar printed areas on the reverse side.
Care must also be taken during the production and handling of matt coated papers to avoid unnecessary marking, i.e. reduced stack heights and slower speeds. If marking does occur the use of a silicon spray may be beneficial.
It is always advisable to allow a matt paper 48 hours drying time after printing whenever possible - this will greatly increase resistance to ink-rub
.
