Lecture 5 - Storm Thorgerson
In association with Consort.
Lecture date:
19 September 2007, BAFTA, London
The notion of record covers as works of art, as epic visual statements, is mainly derived from the great album covers of the 60s and 70s. Today, in the age of music downloads and CDs, we are less likely to encounter epic cover art. Many of the best covers from the golden era are the work of design studio Hipgnosis, and their founder Storm Thorgerson, who was the fifth to take the stand in the lecture series. Printed on Consort, the accompanying journal of the evening contained some of Thorgerson's best work; iconoclastic, disturbing, and turbo-charged with psychological weirdness.
