Reduced Packaging Solutions

In partnership with their primary packaging supplier, Howard Smith Paper Retail has made significant progress in helping their customers achieve ambitious packaging reduction targets by reviewing both primary and secondary packaging for their products. In some cases savings of <60% have been made through a combination of initiatives.
The biggest savings have come from the development of all-in-one CDU's (customer display units), which through innovation and collaboration between customers and suppliers, means packaging in some cases is over half the weight of an equivalent CDU and outer box, yet robust enough to protect the product during distribution and storage, while still being fit-for-purpose.
Additional savings have been made with respect to primary packaging, where the weight of board used for inkjet paper wallets has been reduced by 10%, and unless absolutely necessary customers are asked to consider not using any additional packaging such as shrink wrap or poly bags.
Nick Linstow, Product Services Manager said, 'Reducing packaging weights and components is a key objective of ours. For now we're proud to be exceeding all our customer's targets, but in collaboration with customers and suppliers, the process of development will always be on-going.'
